  1. Hey Ronni,

I'm inheriting my mother's 10-year-old Siamese mix. Suzy is used to the freedom of an indoor-outdoor lifestyle, but she'll become indoor only when she moves in with me. She has and will be keeping all of her claws.

Any suggestions on making her transition go as smoothly as possible?

  2. HI Vix! You'll have to watch her, to make sure she doesn't dart out the door. If she shows signs of wanting out really badly, you might see if she'll adapt to going out on a leash. In my experience, some cats will, and others just won't. You could gradually get her used to wearing the harness (collars are a really bad idea).

She'll need something to sharpen her claws on. My cats like a special piece of cardboard cat furniture. It's a flat box with corrugated cardboard inside, and with catnip in it. It's express purpose is the sharpening of claws. We have an old chair in the kitchen that two or three cats really like. One leg has been scratched till it's ragged! Sometimes a bit of old carpet works. But they must have something. Just keep trying different things until you hit on one she likes. Or, use the same as she has had at your mother's, if Mom had something. Get the same food she's used to eating.

You might want to confine her to a spare bedroom or bath for a day or so after you bring her home. Make sure she has the same kind of kitty litter, too.

Good luck with the kitty, and keep me posted on how it goes!

  3. Jillian, she is really cute. She chases the broom and scatters the dirt pile. She also climbs my leg. Husband's slippers are not safe from attack, either.
