Directing a Christmas show about directing a Christmas Pageant can be a bit confusing, at times. Particularly as I have directed the same show before, in 1993, and, a couple of years after that, I played Grace Bradley, the very nice lady who gets driven right round the bend directing the pageant.
Sometimes it's hard to remember exactly what I'm doing. So far, I have too many places where there's not enough motion. Fortunately, I have both an Assistant Director who is a gift from the Powers that Be, and a Stage Manager who, while very young, will do just fine. The Moms involved in the show are a huge help, and the kids are very dedicated. Many of them have wanted to do this show for years. They see it as a glorious opportunity, rather than a chore.
I went into this project with some trepidation. The audition process was gruelling, between the mistake in the advertising leading to an extra day of auditions, and the Mommies bringing me identical twins under the age of two for baby angels. I was a bit flustered by the time I finally got a cast.
Every experienced director has told me that 90% of directing is casting. So far, it has been the most difficult part of the process.
I am sure that, after opening night is done and over, I'll be here, sipping Glenlivet and posting in a sentimental way about The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, ever!
